Shababeek Table Runner — a whole Egyptian summer, stitched by hand

Shababeek means "windows" — and this hand-embroidered table runner is a whole Egyptian street seen through them. Open shutters, a wrought-iron balcony, a leaning bicycle, cats keeping watch, and everywhere the food of high summer: fish, okra, peppers, garlic and grapes strung up to dry in the sun.

It's a quiet tribute to Egypt's oldest pantry — the summer itself. Long before refrigeration, families preserved the season by hanging it out to dry, a ritual that still lingers in villages and neighbourhoods today. (The full story — and its link to the 4,000-year-old tale of The Eloquent Peasant — is on our journal.)
